We require sharing compensation information in our Jobs and Gigs listings to uphold our Community Agreements of transparency, accountability, and justice-focused actions. For any job that can be performed in New York City, a minimum and maximum salary range is required by law as of November 1, 2022. For more information, please visit the NYC Commission on Human Rights.
Additionally, jobs must meet at least minimum wage to be posted on Listings Project. We do not accept listings for unpaid internships or jobs below minimum wage.
Including compensation information assures that interested parties can gauge whether or not this job is compatible with their skillset and financial needs. Including compensation information ensures that both the hiring manager and candidate are not committing their time towards an application process that will not advance to the hiring process. Additionally, sharing a salary increases the amount and quality of applications you receive.
Advertising a salary before the application process begins also holds the hiring party accountable that a specific candidate’s value will not be underestimated due to bias or discrimination. It is especially important to be transparent about salaries in light of the chronic gender wage gap and the wage gap between white people and BIPOC.
We discourage listings that say the salary is “TBD” “Competitive” or “Commensurate to experience.” Instead, if the exact amount of salary is dependent on the experience or availability of the candidate you hire, we recommend including the starting salary or salary range you have budgeted for this process.
