National Housing Resources:
| The Fair Housing Act | The Fair Housing Act, a U.S. federal law, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, financing, or advertising of housing. It protects individuals and families from being discriminated against based on race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin, and disability. In addition, States have housing laws that expand upon federal protections. |
| The National Fair Housing Alliance | The National Fair Housing Alliance works to eliminate housing discrimination and to ensure equal housing opportunities for all. They have a wide variety of resources, programs and initiatives. |
| National Low Income Housing Coalition | The National Low Income Housing Coalition is dedicated to achieving racially and socially equitable public policy that ensures people with the lowest incomes have quality homes that are accessible and affordable in communities of their choice. They have a list of rental assistance programs in every state. |
| Don't Call The Police | Don’t Call the Police is an online directory of local resources available as alternatives to calling the police or 911. State-by-state resources include lists of housing resources. |
New York State Housing Resources:
| The Fair Housing Justice Center | The Fair Housing Justice Center supports individuals and organizations with allegations of illegal housing discrimination. To report a housing discrimination complaint, see here. They also have a list of fair housing resources. |
| Report a Housing Complaint to 311 | 311 is the city number through which you can gain access to NYC government services and information, especially related to housing. When you call 311, you can make an anonymous complaint about maintenance problems, rent stabilization, tenant harassment, and more. |
| Met Council on Housing |
Met Council’s Tenant Rights Hotline is a free, volunteer-run hotline for brief answers to your rights as a tenant. They can provide referrals to agencies, community organizing groups, and tenant lawyers. Additionally, their Help and Answers section provides resources for a broad range of topics like: rights as a roommate, broken appliances, bedbugs, breaking leases, subletting, and more. |
| JustFix.nyc | JustFix.nyc co-creates tools with tenants, organizers, and legal advocates to fight displacement and achieve stable, healthy housing for all. You can use their tools to request repairs in your apartment, research your property owner, and protect yourself from eviction |
| Hudson Valley Justice Center | Hudson Valley Justice Center provides free legal services to tenants and tenant groups for lease violations, housing code violations, housing discrimination and utility shut-offs, and more. |
California Housing Resources
| 211 California | 211 California is a free and confidential information and referral service serving people of all income levels, languages, and cultural backgrounds. In California and across the U.S., millions of families rely on 211 for help finding community services such as rent and mortgage assistance, food and shelter, health care, job training, transportation, child care, senior care, and more. |
| Housing Rights Center’s Hotline | The Housing Rights Center is dedicated to securing and promoting fair housing for all across California. HRC's trained Housing Counselors can answer your questions about rent, evictions, security deposits, repairs, harassment, discrimination, and more housing concerns. |
| Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles Fire Recovery Resources | The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles is a nonprofit law firm working for tenants rights in LA, which offers know-your-rights workshops for those affected by wildfires. |
| Los Angeles Tenants’ Union | L.A. Tenants Union is an autonomous, member-funded union which fights for the human right to housing. Their resources page is extensive and offers yearly-updated tenants handbooks. |
| City of Los Angeles Housing + Community Investment Department | The Los Angeles Housing + Community Investment Department works to preserve and protect affordable housing in Los Angeles. This page includes resources and complaint procedures for when you have experienced housing discrimination. |
